Lyme Disease
Lyme Disease is a multi-system illness that affects over 300 000 new people every year, although these numbers are estimated to be much higher as it is known to be a severely misdiagnosed illness. The bacteria can be contracted from a tick bite, which is the most well-known form of transmission, but it can also be passed along from fleas and mosquitoes, blood transfusions, transplacental to fetus if pregnant, breastfeeding, unpasteurized milk, and through sexual contact. Obtaining a diagnosis of Lyme disease can be difficult; while testing is available in Canada, unfortunately it is not sensitive enough to always provide an accurate result, or overcome the challenges that the Lyme bacteria can present. Those who suffer with this disease often face difficulty when trying to find answers or seek treatment, as many doctors and specialists are unwilling to answer or approach the subject.
