Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is an ancient medical system that takes a deep understanding of the laws and patterns of nature and applies them to the human body. TCM consists of several modalities that are used individually or in combination to get substantial results for patients. Dr. Risk and Dr. Wittner use acupuncture and Chinese herbs in combination with cupping, scraping (Gua sha) and, moxibustion.
Tongue and pulse diagnosis are two of the more important diagnostic tools in Chinese medicine. The tongue represents the underlying long term condition of the body while the pulse signifies what is currently occurring in the body. They are both used to derive a TCM diagnosis for your condition which is used to plan a treatment. Acupuncture is the most renowned of these modalities. Chinese herbal medicine is the next recognized modality of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Herbal therapy is the use of herbal combinations or formulas to strengthen and support organ system function. For best results herbal medicine is usually combined with acupuncture and other therapies.
Cupping utilizes suction cups to draw the skin up, it acts as an inverse massage to stimulate the flow of blood, break up obstructions, and create an avenue for toxins to be drawn out of the body. Scraping (Gua sha) has similar functions as cupping, but instead uses tools such as jade, or bone with liniment on to scrape and rub repeatedly the relevant parts of the skin, to activate blood circulation which dissipates blood stasis. Moxibustion comprises the burning of the herb mugwort (Ai Ye) above the skin or on top of a needle to increase and smooth the flow of blood, it is also successfully used to turn breech babies into a normal head-down position prior to childbirth.
At Ananta Health, Dr. Risk and Dr. Wittner form a treatment plan for each individual based on clinical findings and patient needs. A combination of Traditional Chinese Medicine, BioMeridian assessment, supplements, Autonomic Response Testing (ART) and Family Constellations are utilized to ensure our patients achieve and maintain optimum wellness and balance.
